Statehood Petition Reaches Washington

ATTRACTS MUCH ATTENTION

Circular Letter is Referred to Committee on Territories.

Washington, Jan. 7--A petition asking for the support of the bill for the commission of New Mexico separate statehood was received today in the form of a letter from Chairman W. S. Hopewell, of the New Mexico Statehood league addressed to Representative Fulton, of Illinois. It was referred to the committee on territories.

The petition read that when Governor George Curry visited Washington recently President Roosevelt assured him that he would lend his hand towards securing the passage of his bill and is satisfied that New Mexico was sufficient population and wealth to entitle it to be admitted as a separate state.

The letter give the present population of New Mexico above 400,000 and states that a delegation representing every county in the territory will visit Washington this month to urge Congress the passage of the separate statehood bill.

Colony of Negroes Found a Townsite in Chaves County.

The Blackdom Townsite Company of Blackdom, Chaves county, today … amendments to their charter with Nathan Jaffa, secretary of the territory. The amendments concern a change in the number of directors allowed the company. Blackdom is a colony negroes.
