An Exclusive Negro Settlement to be Located in Southern Part of Chave County

A town and settlement exclusively for negroes are being organized in the southern part of Chaves county, within the artesian belt, some few miles from Pecos valley railroad. The promoters of this settlement expect to settle 10,000 people at one time, so as to avoid the enactment of a special law by Congress, debarring anyone but colored settlers from certain townships.

The settlement promoters style themselves the Blackdom Townsite company, and May 1, 1904 has been decided upon as the opening day. The officers of the company which is capitalized at $10,000, are F. While artesian wells are to form the basin of the water supply for the town site, the company expects to operate a large number of irrigation pumps. With pumping system in charge of expert machinists and engineers.

The president of the company has written to the secretary of the bureau of immigration asking for 500 or more of the Chaves county pamphlets. He also wished information regarding pumping systems, and the pumps best adapted to irrigation in New Mexico.

The company is also desires of securing concessions from the railroads on which their colonist will have to travel. Most of the colonists will come from the South and bring with them cattle and swine. A tanning factory is also to be erected on the Blackdom townsite.

ARTESIA -- A short time ago the Negro preacher from Blackdom, a Negro settlement in Chaves Count, came to Artesia to solicit funds for a new church. He received a liberal response to his plea for donations and went home well pleased with the consideration given him, but there are no Negroes residing in this town. Artesia is the only town of any size in New Mexico where colored race is absolutely barred out.

LETTERS Don't fight Blackdom memorial To Whom It May Concern: The recent article in this newspaper concerning the fight against the monument to Blackdom saddened my heart. As a black woman who was born and raised in Roswell, I am painfully aware of the lack of resources offered on African American history in this town. I am also very familiar with the amount of publicity that the alleged UFO crash receives In Roswell. It never ceases to amaze me to see so many storefronts, eateries and museums dedicated to this alleged crash. Why the "powers that be" would fight a $225,000 monument to honor the lives and commitment of the families of Blackdom. but approve a project dedicated to the aliens that is worth millions, is beyond me. It is more than disturbing because it shows a complete lack of concern for this part of Roswell history. Is it because the work of the African American families of Blackdom is so insignificant that they simply do not count? The argument in the newspaper stated that the monument was an issue because the town actually lay 18 miles South of Roswell. Mow sad to know that in 18 miles of travel, an entire town can lose its history to red tape. 1 wonder if Blackdom brought the same amount of money into Roswell as the aliens do, If the construction of the monument would still be such an issue?
