In East St. Louis with a population of about 84,000 persons, (there was already a large negro colony and the war influx increased the proportion to an extent which caused much comments. Unrest among the whites smothered, and even flamed up last May, when in a small riot three negroes were shot and wounded, and a number beaten, but felling did not run high in general, as the negroes were merely filling vacancies, not taking the places of white men and with the article of soldiers quiet was quickly restored Race antagonism however, remained.
