#BlackColonizer | “Poor Deluded Negroes,” May 3, 1895

“A negro boy who escaped from the negro colony in Mexico, (mention of which was made in these columns when the negroes were moving hence), gives a startling account of the deplorable condition of the poor negroes who were tricked into the enterprise. The boy’s account gives in an interview with the Houston Post, is in effect: that the negroes are poorly fed, poorly clothed, camped in herds, without shelter, worked from daylight until dark, and all the time under strict guard by Mexicans, armed. The poor negroes did not know what real slavery was until they reached Mexico as so-called colonists. The United States Government should take immediate steps to ascertain if the assertions of this boy are true-- and then see to it that the negroes have justice and that speedily.”
