Blackdom’s revival coincided with Roswellians' increased indulgence of White supremacy and their use of racialization tools in the Borderlands; D. W. Griffith’s 1915 film, Birth of a Nation. In October of 1917, “Every genius has his master creation,” according to The Roswell Daily Record, the largest daily paper, in Chaves County. By 1920, their increased reporting of menacing negroes; increased the hypervisibility of Blackdomites in Roswell.
Before 1917, there were very few if any vagrancy charges filed against Black people. Vagrancy laws were legal traps in the racialization of the American South. Once Blackdom Oil was announced, Roswellians were bombarded with, “Police Capture 11 in Big Raid.” Along with the city’s increased surveillance of Black people, the attention turned toward the “negro pool hall.” Blackdom’s success yielded increased aggression toward people under the conditions of Blackness in Southeastern New Mexico.
