No "#JimCrow" Laws | Roswell Daily Record, May 11, 1920

“After emancipation, his family continued to live on the farm of the Boyer family, their former owners, and Boyer is proud of the fact that relationship between the White and Negro residents of that section of Georgia always has been good. There has never been a lynching within the borders of the county, he says.”

Las Cruces Sun-News, Sunday, March 30, 1947

Roswell Daily Record Tuesday, May 11, 1920

At the turn of the 20th Century, convinced that sovereignty was attainable, Frank Boyer employed his freedoms in the Mexico-U.S. Borderlands. Blackdom’s success was his means to an end. Blackdomites exploited New Mexico’s frontier space because of the distance between racist New Mexicans and the law. Blackdomites were sovereignty seekers who promoted a “Negro Refuge,” but explicitly preferred farmers, mostly because city dwellers often lacked the cultural training. With “No Jim Crow Laws,” Blackdomites manifested sovereignty that included oil royalties as a buttress.

#BlackColonizer | "Negro Colony Near Brownsville," Sunday, May 10, 1936
“Since Texas was at that time under the Mexican flag, it is believed that this colony of negroes was sent north by the Mexican government.”

“Since Texas was at that time under the Mexican flag, it is believed that this colony of negroes was sent north by the Mexican government.”

“The negro colony, once near the present city of Brownsville, is known to have existed many years before the hardy Texans declared their independence from Mexico.”

Brownsville Herald Sunday, May 10, 1936

#BlackColonizer | "Alabama Has Town of Negroes Alone & It Succeeds," May 8, 1916
New Castle New May 8, 1916

New Castle New May 8, 1916

“After several years' struggle against heavy odds, including local unsympathetic and gloomy predictions of failure by #Wipepo of neighboring towns, Hobson City, Alabama, the only municipality in the United States with one exception which is wholly populated and conducted by negroes, has won its battle by demonstrating that it is a pronounced success."

New Castle News, May 8, 1916

#BlackColonizer | “Poor Deluded Negroes,” May 3, 1895

“A negro boy who escaped from the negro colony in Mexico, (mention of which was made in these columns when the negroes were moving hence), gives a startling account of the deplorable condition of the poor negroes who were tricked into the enterprise. The boy’s account gives in an interview with the Houston Post, is in effect: that the negroes are poorly fed, poorly clothed, camped in herds, without shelter, worked from daylight until dark, and all the time under strict guard by Mexicans, armed. The poor negroes did not know what real slavery was until they reached Mexico as so-called colonists. The United States Government should take immediate steps to ascertain if the assertions of this boy are true-- and then see to it that the negroes have justice and that speedily.”

Abilene, TX Taylor County News, May 3, 1895
