Deposits of the Blackdom Terrace The Blackdom terrace like the Orchard Park terrace appears to be erosional rather than constructional and the deposits associated with that surface are merely a veneer It is the opinion of the writer that the thickness of 80 feet ascribed to these deposits by Nye1 includes beds belonging to the underlying quartzose conglomerate and that the actual thickness is probably less than 20 feet The deposits of the Blackdom terrace are very similar to those of the Orchard Park though the size of the Blackdom pebbles appear to be somewhat larger on the average than those of the Orchard Park Much of the surface of the larger undissected remnants of the Blackdom surface is underlain by dense compact caliche that is quite different than the chalky caliche of the Orchard Park terrace It is white on the weathered surfaces but fresh exposures have the appearance of brown fine grained banded limestone Chalky caliche similar to that found on the Orchard Park surface is also present in the Blackdom surface where gravel beds are present at the surface The dense limestone like caliche is usually a few inches thick while the chalky type has a thickness of 3 to 4 feet .
