#EllaBoyer | Roswell Daily Record, May 17, 1920

“During his college career, Boyer worked as proof-reader on the old Atlanta Constitution. He married Ella McGruder, now 74 who was graduated as a nurse from Haines Institute, founded by Miss Lucy Laney.”

Las Cruces Sun News, Sunday, March 30, 1947

Ella McGruder married Frank Boyer and they had 10 children. Ella’s life revolved around children due to her choice to train as a registered midwife. She officiated so many births there were too many to count by the end of her life. Ella was prominent among the community and held office in the Negro Order of Eastern Star; in New Mexico, an axillary organization of freemasonry. In 1909, she began her homestead. By 1910, she spent about $3000 ($80,000 today) to prove-up her land with little success. After numerous extensions, Ella successfully proved-up her homestead and entered a final patent in December of 1918.
